How Much Will The ELD Mandate Cost Local Governments

ELD mandate is coming.  We recently had an article come out the the state of Indiana is seeing a delay.  I am guessing that someone said what the heck is this and we have to do what?  Take officers out of the field to give them training to read a new type of ELD result.  How many ELD companies are there? How is an officer going to spot a fake ELD program?  They can’t spot a fake paper one.  You think they are going to be able to spot a fake emailed or one on a phone? How much does training cost for enforcement officers to stop what they are doing and sit in a class and learn how to enforce this.  What if the ELD software or phone is glitchy.  What if they can’t get a reading and then a truck gets in an accident.  Does enforcement office get sued for not being able to stop an illegal driver? The whole thing seems pretty weird.  Why would the government be mandating an unchecked software system to be implemented nationwide and why would more states not see this as a huge cost to them. The ELD companies are self certifying themselves to say that their products work as the should. That seems pretty sweet.  Now the code enforcement division is totally at the mercy of companies that have been selling these devices for profit.  Telling themselves and others they work right. And even more that no one really knows how to use them from the Law Enforcement side either. How many ELD companies are there.  Are the people going to be trained in every type of ELD with instructions on how to get the results?  Can’t someone just make a fake one that puts out the same result and looks the same a self certified one?  I think they said they could email the results anyway.  How reliable is that. Tesla New Truck – Good For Trucking

Tesla announced its new truck and it looks pretty amazing.  Center driving seat with displays all around.  And tons of pickup.  more can be seen at the Tesla Website https://www.tesla.com/semi/ I guess there are a lot of people will have some opinions about this one.  I think its great. 1) City route truck that could be charged over night and run all day.  This would be great for local truck fleets.  Who will be the first trucking LTL company to embrace this technology and prove out the cost of ownership. 2) Short haul hub and spoke operations – This is supposed to get 500 miles range.  That is pretty good.  A trucker might be able to legally drive 600 to 800 miles based on current regulations. 70 MPH x 10 hours = 700 miles.  Thats is saying no stopping or rest.  Can be done but pretty hard. Tesla truck can be used for areas like Dallas to move goods from DFW to OKC and Shreveport and to Houston and to Austin.  They can be charged over night and make a return trip in the morning. 3) Long haul with super chargers – If you put a power charger station strategically based over a route then these trucks can go for longer distance.  They take about 30 min to charge.  So a stop 500 miles in is not to terrible.  For the team drivers this may not be a good fit but for running a truck lane like Dallas Ft Worth to Chicago you get a quick break half way through the night and plenty of juice to role in and make a...

America Badly Needs More Truckers

According to a new report from the American Trucking Associations (ATA), the industry requires 50,000 more drivers by the end of this year. That is a lot of new truckers. Time to get in a truck and drive. Seriously if we really need 50,000 more truckers then existing trucks are going to pull in a seriously lot of money. Check out the Load Board with rates to watch this happen. But lets keep in in mind that this is the ATA we are talking about and they really represent only the top 15% of the industry. So really what they are saying is that they need truckers to work for them to make lower then average amounts so that they can make a profit servicing the contracts that they signed years ago to huge corporations. If they had 50,000 new dirvers they could pay them less and charge more. Maybe the Trucking industry should stop messing around with drivers and ELD mandates if they really want to help get more trucks on the road. Cut the cost to operate a truck and stop micromanaging the amount of time a driver can drive. Maybe ELD s are good for bad drivers that routinely get violations . Use it as a punishment kinda like a convicted DUI driver that needs breathalyzer to start their car. Why infuriate the whole industry. We know buy now that 85% of truckers are parts of a smaller fleet of 5-10 trucks or less or own their own truck and drive independently. 3 Big Indicators That Trucking Industry Is Strong

There are 3 really big news worthy events happening right now that show investment is being made into the transportation segment of the US Economy. First – Warren Buffet, Probably the biggest investor in the country just bought a huge stake in Pilot Truck Stops.  He already owns a railroad so I am pretty sure he is getting some signals that this industry is worth investing in.  Either demand for services is going up or he thinks the price of oil is about to skyrocket.  Either way rates will be going up because as of today there is still no other way to move products from point A to Point B without a big truck. Second – US Xpress just signed a 200 million order for new trucks from Navistar.  Fleets have been sitting on the sidelines but they are making a push now.  One of the driving factors is the thinking that ELD‘s will push a lot of small trucking guys out and rates will go up.  That is a whole other story about how the ATA is supporting big truck companies and is trying to over regulate the little companies. Third – Tesla getting into the truck market with electric trucks.  This guy is a genius and drilling tunnels from DC to NY for his hyperloop train idea.  He see enough potential to invent an electric truck that is set to debut 11/16.  (It does keep getting pushed back)  But it is coming and it is going to change the way trucking is done.  Self driving auto assist features and a crazy electric engine that is powered by batteries...

Truckers Should Take BitCoin As Payment

The new Cyber currency market is exploding and trucks should think about taking payments in Bit Coin (BTH) or some of the other formats. Super easy way to get paid and more and more people have the currency.  Overstock.com takes it.  Point Of sale systems will be at gas stations soon and the universal cyber currency will soon be everywhere. One of the easiest ways to get started into the world of BitCoins and other Cyber Currencies is to set up an account at Coinbase.com .  Super easy set up and once you are set up you can accept bitcoins.  You can buy them as well at ATMs. BitCoin is really like an alt currency where some of the other types of Alt Coins like Etherium(ETH) and Ripple (XRP) are basically transaction engines for fast payments.  These can be built into applications and transacted at fractions of percent.  The benefit is that as this gets more and more wide spread and it will for sure carriers should get ready to educate them selves on how to accept these alt coin currencies.
